The conglomerate US General Electric (GE) won a major equipment supply agreement for the new 430-megawatt power plant at Iernut, Romania, the first major agreement since 2015, when it took over the energy operations of the French industrial group Alstom for 10,6 billion dollars, reports Reuters. GE will provide all the core technology for the 268 million euro (299 million dollars) plant, which will be built by Duro Felguera and Romelectro for the state company Romgaz.

Prior to the purchase of Alstom, GE would simply have delivered gas turbines and would have gone further. Along with Alstom, it acquired the steam production technology, as well as the ability to supply all of the peripheral equipment needed to build a complete power plant. GE stated on Friday for Reuters, that the unit will generate enough energy to supply one million households in Romania, being the largest natural gas project in Southeast Europe over the past five years. General Electric will supply the plant with four 6F gas turbines, two turbines producing steam and four heat recovery generators. The construction will begin this year and should be completed in 2019, replacing the current Iernut thermal plant, according to Agerpres.

GE is present on the Romanian market since 1984. In addition to GE Capital, General Electric’s activities range from turbine and aircraft engine production to medical equipment production. On November 1st, 2016, the national gas producer, Romgaz, signed an agreement worth 268 million euros, excluding VAT, with the Duro Felguera and Romelectro companies, for the construction of a new electricity production power plant within the Iernut thermal plant. Romgaz took over the Iernut plant in 2013 from Electrocentrale Bucuresti, on account of a debt of 653 million lei.
