Nicușor Dan (winner of the elections with over 54%, according to BEC data at 9:00 p.m.) wants a government with a large majority in Parliament, which would include the Save Romania Union, and with Ilie Bolojan as prime minister, declared on Sunday the interim president of the USR, Dominic Fritz.
He stressed, in a press conference, that USR supports the proposals.
“Nicușor Dan has already said two things publicly, so it is no secret that I confirm them here as well. He wants a Government with a large majority in Parliament, which includes USR, and he wants Ilie Bolojan to be prime minister. Both proposals have our full support and now, in the coming days, he, first of all, but, of course, and together with us, will have to hold discussions to make this coalition possible. What is clear is that USR is once again responsible, we are ready and prepared to be part of the government of this country, of course only if this Government will assume real reforms for which the people obviously voted and if we have a credible prime minister,” Fritz said, according to Agerpres.
According to him, Romania needs a Government that ‘assumes the difficult decisions that lie ahead’.
“We will be part of such a Government. I do not think that now is the time when we can talk about a minority Government or another form in which some people clean up after the disaster that was left including by the PSD. But, once again, these discussions must be held in the coming days, in the coming weeks, now it is important to count the votes. I believe that the PSD must also assume the measures that are necessary following some ill-informed decisions. And, once again, as Nicușor Dan said, Romania needs a Government with a large majority and that includes more parties than just USR and PNL”, explained Dominic Fritz.
Asked whether “new people” will be co-opted into the new Government in the event that the PSD enters the coalition, Dominic Fritz highlighted that “no one will receive a blank check”.
“We are responsible, we are not naive, no one will receive a blank check and of course the signal of renewal of the political class is a signal that this new Government will have to give. What does this mean in concrete terms? This will be the content of the discussions, negotiations and it is not necessarily something that needs to be announced now. (…) We are not now at the moment when we are dividing ministries, when we are measuring curtains, but now we are counting the votes, then we will also discuss with the elected president and with the other parties what is the best path for Romania”, the USR leader indicated.
