“Romania’s energy industry has solid technical capabilities, but it risks falling behind its European competitors due to overly short contract terms,” said Florin Pop, CEO of EnergoBit.
“When talking with colleagues around the world, predictability extended to three years, even four years. They were already telling me what projects they would have in 2030. Predictability isn’t just about contracts; it stems from the legislative sphere,” said Pop at the Energy Strategy Summit 2026, organized by Energynomics.
While Western companies in the sector are already planning three to four years ahead, Romanian firms are lucky if they have contracts secured for a year, Pop explained. He emphasized that this lack of predictability has a ripple effect, namely that legislative uncertainties lead to a portfolio of projects that are also unpredictable, which in turn prevents contractors from planning resources and capacities for the long term.
The problem is further exacerbated by the delivery schedules of equipment manufacturers, who already have orders booked four years in advance. Thus, a company that wants to order equipment today may have to wait five years for delivery.
However, according to the director of EnergoBit, there are five areas in which Romania is keeping pace with European trends: the digitization of substations, the increasing complexity of EPC projects, a focus on environmentally friendly solutions (including SF6-free equipment), cybersecurity, and modularity.
“We are very well prepared from a technical standpoint and are open to promoting our solutions on the European market as well,” Pop added.
