Eugen Tomac was designated as Prime Minister proposal by the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, who says he supports an ”independent” candidate. Next step to get the position- Tomac has to be approved by the Parliament.
Eugen Tomac is an honorary advisor for relations with Romanians abroad – Department of Foreign Policy, Strategic Partnerships and Romanians Abroad within the Presidency of Romania.
Eugen Tomac is a graduate of the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest, with over 20 years of national and European political experience. He is currently a Member of the European Parliament and President of the Popular Movement Party.
Throughout his career, he has consistently supported projects dedicated to defending the rights of Romanians in the Diaspora and historical communities. He is actively involved in initiatives regarding the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union, as well as in projects aimed at promoting Romanian cultural identity in the region.
Since July 2019, Eugen Tomac has been a Member of the European Parliament, serving his second term. In the Brussels Parliament, he is a member of the Committee on Culture and Education, the Committee on Employment, the Special Committee on the European Democratic Shield, the Delegation to the EU-Republic of Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, and the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.
Between 2012 and 2019, he was a Member of the Parliament of Romania. In the parliamentary elections of 9 December 2012, he obtained 78.6% of the votes of Romanians abroad, being appointed President of the Committee for Romanian Communities Abroad in the Chamber of Deputies.
Between 2009 and 2012, he was Secretary of State within the Department for Romanians Abroad, and later, State Counselor within the Chancellery of the President of Romania.
At the same time, in 2006-2007 he was Expert for relations with Romanians abroad within the Presidential Administration.
Between 2004–2006 he was editor of the magazine Magazin Istoric.
Eugen Tomac was appointed Honorary Advisor to the President of Romania for relations with Romanians abroad on October 6, 2025.
