The energy sector in Europe is facing “an exceptional crisis”, Catherine MacGregor, the managing director of the French gas importer Engie, said on Friday, adding that the current developments, dominated in particular by the reduction of Russian supplies and the need to switch to green energy, are “a moment of crossroads,” reports Reuters.

“The world of energy, as we knew it, will never be the same again,” the Engie boss told RTL radio.

Asked whether Engie, France’s main gas supplier to households, could face a gas shortage this winter, MacGregor said she was “extremely confident there won’t be any problems” unless weather conditions severe lead to an unusually high demand, according to Agerpres.

“That’s why the message regarding saving energy remains extremely important”, added the head of Engie.

Gazprom informed Engie about the reduction of gas supplies, starting on Tuesday, due to the disagreement between the parties regarding the application of some contracts.

Gas from Russia now accounts for less than 4% of Engie’s imports, down from 17% before the Ukraine war, and in recent months supplies have fallen to just 1.5 TWh, the French utility group said.

Last month, Engie concluded a three-year contract with the Algerian state company Sonatrach regarding the price of gas to be delivered through the Medgaz submarine pipeline, with a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters per year. Sonatrach and Engie “reached an agreement regarding the contract for the supply and sale of natural gas through Medgaz”.
