ENGIE Romania announces the acquisition of a new battery energy storage project (Battery Energy Storage System – BESS), currently in the pre-construction phase, in the town of Călan, Hunedoara County. The system will have an installed power of 54 MW and a storage capacity of 216 MWh, which will allow the delivery of electricity to the grid for up to four hours at full power. Commissioning is scheduled for January 2029.

Battery storage solutions play an essential role in the integration of renewable energy into the energy system, by storing energy produced during periods when production exceeds demand and using it when energy needs increase.

With this acquisition, ENGIE Romania’s storage portfolio reaches approximately 140 MW / 386 MWh and includes, in addition to the Călan project, two other systems currently under construction: 80 MW / 160 MWh in Șelimbăr, Sibiu County, and 5 MW / 10 MWh in Băleni, Galați County. The latter is integrated into the company’s operational 50 MW wind farm and represents ENGIE’s first hybrid project in Europe that combines, in the same location, wind energy production and battery energy storage.

The transaction reflects ENGIE Romania’s strategy to develop an integrated portfolio, in which renewable energy production is complemented by storage solutions. This approach allows for a more efficient use of renewable energy and supports grid balancing, contributing to the development of a more flexible, resilient and low-carbon national energy system.

This development is part of ENGIE’s accelerated expansion in the field of flexibility at European level. In July and August alone, the Group expanded its portfolio through a series of strategic acquisitions, the start of construction and the commissioning of new projects in Poland, Belgium, Portugal, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Romania, representing a cumulative capacity of 1.1 GW / 3.3 GWh.

These developments support ENGIE’s ambition to reach 95 GW of installed capacity in renewable energy production and storage by 2030.
