Slovenské elektrárne (SE) has connected the first of two turbine generators of the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 to the Slovak grid and, as a result, it began supplying electricity to the network following the generator’s synchronization with the grid at 20% of the reactor’s nominal capacity. The plant was connected less than three weeks after the Slovak Nuclear Regulator greenlighted the beginning of the power start-up on January 13th, 2023.

This is an important milestone for Slovenské elektrárne, which started construction of Mochovce’s Unit 3 in 2008, and for the Enel Group that currently controls a stake in the company of around 33%.

The new generating capacity, which is in line with the parameters of the EU taxonomy, is the second newly built nuclear power plant to be connected to the European network in 15 years. Once fully operational, the 471 MW Mochovce Unit 3 will contribute to reduce Europe’s dependence on gas alongside meeting around 13% of Slovakia’s total electricity consumption with no carbon footprint.

The majority shareholder in SE is Slovak Power Holding B.V. (SPH) with a stake slightly exceeding 66%. In SPH, EP Slovakia B.V. (a subsidiary of the EPH Group) holds 50% of the share capital and the remaining 50% belongs to Enel Produzione S.p.A. (a subsidiary of the Enel Group). The Slovak Republic, through its Economy Ministry, is the minority shareholder of SE, with a stake slightly lower than 34%.
