Electrica has obtained technical grid-connection approvals for 17 battery energy storage projects, with a total capacity of approximately 700 MWh, and has secured nearly RON 4.9 million through the Modernisation Fund for a BESS project of around 22 MWh at the Vulturu photovoltaic plant, in Vrancea county. The two announcements point to an acceleration of the company’s storage portfolio, at a time when batteries are becoming increasingly important for the integration of renewables, system flexibility and security of energy supply.
The technical grid-connection approvals confirm the technical solution for connecting the projects to the grid and the related conditions, allowing them to move forward to the design, permitting and construction stages. In a statement to the capital market, Alexandru Chiriță, CEO of Electrica, links the storage projects to three key priorities for the energy system: security, flexibility and the integration of renewable energy sources. Storage “strengthens the security and flexibility of the energy system”, accelerates the integration of renewables and leverages the company’s existing assets. Electrica intends to commission these projects by the end of 2027. The storage capacity development programme announced by the company in October 2025 provides for the development of a portfolio of 1 GW of generation and at least 900 MWh of storage.
Vulturu secures financing from the Modernisation Fund
Separately from the package of 17 projects, Electrica announced that it had secured non-reimbursable European financing of approximately RON 4.9 million through the Modernisation Fund for the storage project associated with the Vulturu photovoltaic plant, in Vulturu commune, Vrancea county. The project includes the construction of a battery energy storage capacity, related installations, transformer stations, internal electricity networks, the grid-connection installation, fencing and access roads. The installed storage capacity is around 22 MWh, while the total value of the project is estimated at approximately RON 25.3 million, excluding VAT.
Vulturu is the third project through which Electrica is accessing non-reimbursable funding for electricity generation and storage, following the Satu Mare 2 photovoltaic project, of around 27 MWp, which has already been completed, and the Fântânele BESS project, with a storage capacity of 69.93 MWh, which is expected to be completed this year.
