Unit 1 of the Cernavoda NPP was reconnected to the National Energy System on Sunday morning, after the completion of the planned shutdown program, Nuclearelectrica announced.

According to a company statement, during the planned shutdown, activities from the following programs were carried out: the preventive maintenance program; the corrective maintenance program; the inspection program; the mandatory testing program during the planned shutdown period and the project change implementation program.

„The work related to the planned shutdown program was carried out in safe conditions for the plant”s personnel, the public and the environment, according to the approved procedures used at the Cernavoda NPP,” the statement said.

Unit 1 of the Cernavodă NPP entered into planned shutdown on May 10, 2026.

Unit 1 of the Cernavodă NPP was put into operation in 1996, and, to date, the operation of Unit 1 has led to the avoidance of 145 million tons of CO2 in the atmosphere and has safely delivered over 149 million MWh, at a capacity factor of over 90%, being based on the capacity factor in the top three nuclear reactors, globally.

The National Company Nuclearelectrica manages the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, which operates Units 1 and 2, with a capacity of 700 MWe, as well as the Pitești Nuclear Fuel Plant, which is a qualified producer of CANDU 6 nuclear fuel.
