Electrica announces that on December 18, 2025, it signed the EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) contract for the construction of an independent electricity storage facility in Fântânele, Mureș County. The project has a capacity of 70 MWh, a total investment of €16.5 million, and a completion date in 2026.

The implementation will be ensured by ENEVO Group, together with partners Prime Batteries Technology and SIMTEL, selected following a procurement process. The project marks Electrica’s first step towards a “standalone” storage facility – i.e., a storage project developed as an independent asset, without being directly integrated into a production park (e.g., photovoltaic or wind).

Electricity storage is becoming an increasingly important element in an energy system where the share of renewable sources is growing. As wind and solar production varies depending on weather conditions, storage capacities can contribute to:

    • rapid network balancing (through charging/discharging as needed),
    • reducing congestion and optimizing the use of existing infrastructure,
    • increasing the stability and flexibility of the energy system,
    • more efficient use of renewable energy (limiting losses through curtailment, where they occur).

“The Fântânele project represents a first step towards our goal of 1 GWh storage capacity,” Electrica said, emphasizing that the Fântânele project is its first standalone BESS project and a concrete step towards expanding flexibility capacities.

For ENEVO Group, the project is part of a broader dynamic in the storage market. The company has also signed three similar contracts with Transelectrica, financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with a total value of €9.87 million. According to information submitted to the Bucharest Stock Exchange, Enevo will install photovoltaic power plants and electricity storage systems to supply internal services at several stations of the Romanian transmission and system operator. The projects aim to increase energy efficiency, reduce grid consumption, and strengthen the energy autonomy of Transelectrica’s infrastructure.
