The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has announced a loan of 300 million lei (equivalent to 57 million euros) to the electricity and gas distribution company Delgaz Grid SA, to modernize the network in northeastern Romania, a press release from the international financial institution informs.

The EBRD loan will finance part of Delgaz Grid’s capital expenditure program for the period 2026-2030 in the electricity distribution network, which aims to modernize and digitalize the network, including the implementation of smart meters. These investments are expected to reduce power outages and grid losses, improve reliability and enable the integration of additional renewable energy capacity, supporting Romania’s renewable energy targets for 2030.

The EBRD financing is part of a larger RON 3 billion (EUR 573 million) syndicated facility with six commercial banks. The EBRD’s participation in this syndicated facility strengthens its partnership with one of Romania’s leading distribution system operators and supports the ongoing modernization of energy infrastructure.

Delgaz Grid SA operates electricity and natural gas distribution networks in northern Romania, serving approximately 1.6 million electricity customers and over 2 million natural gas customers. The company is part of the E.ON Group, one of the largest energy network operators in Europe, serving approximately 47 million customers.

The EBRD is a top institutional investor in Romania, having invested over 12.5 billion euros in 594 projects in Romania.
