E.ON, one of the largest energy companies in Europe, is accelerating its digital transformation to support its ambition to become the leader of the energy transition on the continent. The company is focusing on three strategic priorities – growth, sustainability and digitalization – and a modern IT infrastructure, built on SAP S/4HANA Cloud, to cope with operational complexity and the accelerated pace of technological innovation.

E.ON operates in three areas – energy networks, service solutions and energy infrastructure solutions – which impose a high level of operational complexity. To meet this challenge, the company has invested in internal expertise, recruiting over 1,000 specialists, of which over 500 are specialized in data and 300 in cybersecurity.

The digitalization process at the beginning of the standardization of platforms, followed by the transformation of ERP to the cloud and the migration to SAP S/4HANA. Instead of developing fragmented solutions, E.ON opted for a unified architecture, integrating leading technologies into a coherent, scalable system without unnecessary complexity. These basic infrastructure investments have generated tangible results, such as, for example, IT downtime, which has decreased by 77% in the last five years.

At the same time, E.ON has abandoned the model of isolated innovation hubs – digital labs or experimental “garages” – in favor of directly integrating digital tools into business processes. In parallel, the company has implemented a centralized governance structure, including standardized contracting and unified management of IT systems, to maintain cost control and security without limiting innovation.

“Success depends on balance. We must push innovation forward, but not at the expense of stability, cybersecurity or governance,” explained Sebastian Weber, CIO of E.ON.

Investment in people remains just as important: through training and capacity building programs, employees are supported to transform new technologies into measurable business impact.

Furthermore, E.ON is integrating advances directly into core business systems to redefine how its 47 million services interact with enterprise services. The approach is deliberately cautious: instead of developing its own platforms, the company collaborates with established technology providers, maintaining flexibility in its IT portfolio and exploring AI in areas such as money-service automation, predictive maintenance and operational optimization.

“Artificial intelligence is generating the same reaction as previous big technology waves. ChatGPT simplifies my life at home, so I expect it to simplify my life at work too,” said Sebastian Weber, CIO of E.ON.

E.ON’s transformation shows what large-scale modernization means in a complex and highly regulated industry: sustained IT investments, consolidated internal expertise and a disciplined approach.
