E.ON has become the first energy company in Germany to reach the milestone of one million smart meters installed. The one millionth smart metering system was installed by E.ON’s regional subsidiary LEW Verteilnetz (LVN) at a customer near Augsburg. This milestone underlines E.ON’s leading role in the implementation of smart meters and the digitalization of the distribution network in Germany.

With an implementation rate of around 30% by the end of 2025, E.ON is among the leaders in the installation of smart meters. Overall, almost every second smart meter in Germany is installed in E.ON’s network areas, although the company only manages a quarter of the metering points. In the coming years, around 500,000 additional smart systems are expected to be installed annually.

Thomas König, Member of the E.ON Board of Management responsible for Energy Grids, emphasized: “E.ON delivers – even under difficult legal, technical and economic conditions. One million smart meters installed is a clear mandate for the future. We will continue to accelerate the implementation, focusing on the areas where smart meters generate the greatest benefits: heat pumps, charging infrastructure, storage systems, photovoltaic installations and other consumers with flexible consumption. At the same time, it is clear that the process of installing smart meters in Germany urgently needs to be simplified and accelerated – for the benefit of the grid and our customers.”

Smart meters are a central element of the energy transition. Smart devices provide grid operators with real-time information about the state of the distribution grid, thus laying the foundation for efficient control and increased reliability for a stable energy system. Customers – both prosumers and consumers – can become active participants in the energy transition through smart meters, for example by accessing flexible electricity tariffs.

Compared to other countries, Germany has a considerable gap: with a share of only 3.8%, the country has the lowest percentage of smart metering systems in Europe, well below the European average of over 60%.

“For example, in Sweden – where E.ON also played an important role in accelerating the implementation – the second generation of smart meters has already been installed, with almost full coverage at national level. Only a successful implementation can unlock the full potential for grid stability, customer benefits and the smooth running of the energy transition. E.ON is actively involved in this process.”

Delgaz Grid, the electricity and natural gas distribution company of the E.ON Romania Group, reached 586,000 SMART meters installed at the end of last year, of which almost 525,000 are also integrated into the smart metering system.

For the current year, the company planned to install another 120,000 units, and for 2030 the objective is an 85% share of smart metering in the six counties in Moldova where Delgaz Grid operates the electricity network (Bacău, Botoșani, Iași, Neamț, Suceava and Vaslui).
