The Republic of Moldova is accelerating its integration into the European energy market, developing new interconnections with Romania, and investing in renewable energy capacity and storage systems, said Dorin Junghietu, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Moldova.
“The Republic of Moldova has moved from vulnerability to resilience, from energy isolation to European and regional integration,” Junghietu said, at the Energy Strategy Summit 2026, organized by Energynomics.
According to the minister, the next stage of Europe’s energy transition will be defined by three key elements: connectivity, diversification, and flexibility. In this context, the Republic of Moldova is developing new electricity and gas interconnections with Romania and the European Union, modernizing its transmission networks, and creating the necessary conditions for full participation in regional energy markets.
Junghietu argued that diversifying supply sources should be viewed as a form of insurance against geopolitical risks and market shocks. He cited the Vertical Gas Corridor as an example, describing it as a new energy architecture for Southeast Europe capable of connecting multiple supply sources and regional markets.
The minister also drew attention to the rapid growth in global electricity demand, driven by the development of artificial intelligence, data centers, industrial electrification, and electric mobility. In his view, the main challenge is not whether more energy will be needed, but how quickly energy systems resilient enough to meet this demand can be built.
Referring to the Republic of Moldova, Junghietu noted that the authorities are accelerating the development of renewable energy production and storage systems. Following the successful completion of the first auction for renewable energy projects, a second round is already underway and includes hybrid wind projects with storage systems. “We already have over 1,040 MW installed, and we have adopted tax measures to support the accelerated deployment of batteries and storage systems,” the minister said.
He explained that investments in storage are necessary to harness the surplus energy produced during certain periods and to reduce imports during periods of high consumption, when energy is more expensive. Junghietu reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova’s willingness to contribute to the regional and European energy transition, emphasizing the strategic role of cooperation with Romania.
“Europe’s energy future will not be built by a single country, but together, through connectivity, solidarity, and investment,” he added.
