Large-scale electrification can help meet the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2050 in the European Union, given that fossil fuels are the largest contributors to these emissions, said on Tuesday Mihaela Coroiu, Marketing Strategy Director, EnergoBit, during the online event “Clean energy solutions for end consumers,” organized by Energynomics.ro.

“A target to reduce emissions by 60% by 2050 compared to 1990 is a target that is not easy to achieve. At the moment we are looking at 2050, which is not very far, and we see an ambition of 60% of reducing emissions and we only see large-scale electrification. Fossil fuels are the largest contributors to emissions of greenhouse gas, from oil and coal. The gas also remains somewhat polluting, but gas is a depletable resource, a less polluting fuel. The specific emissions are lower and we can consider it as an option for this transition period,” Coroiu mentioned.

She specified that the energy sector is responsible for a very high percentage of greenhouse gas emissions, respectively of 35-40%, according to Agerpres.

“Romania has aligned itself to the European policy and aims to play an important role at regional level. It aims to supply electricity produced also from renewable sources. For residential consumers the programs already started. (…) In principle, at the level of the European Union, the emergence of this green pact, the Green Deal, is driven by the fact that the European Union is responsible for almost a tenth of global greenhouse gas emissions. We see these highly ambitious targets being set for the EU in 2030-2050 and implicitly, Romania, as a member country, assumes an important role. And we see this important role now translated through the national policies, through the strategies, programs, action plans that the Romanian Government develops. Basically, we are in line with these serious ambitions that the European Union has assumed globally,” added Mihaela Coroiu.
