Romania should stimulate electricity consumption at the household level, which is low compared to other European countries, said Corneliu Bodea, president of the Romanian Energy Center.

“We should think about stimulating household consumption, which is very low in Romania. At the same time, we need to bring more consumption from the area of transportation and heating to the area of electrification. This is important, because it creates the basis for profitability in the energy industry”, he said during the “Voices of the Industry” session at the 11th Energy Strategy Summit, the flagship event of Energynomics.

In his view, in terms of the energy transition, “we are at a point where we can’t go backwards, but on the other hand, in order to move forward, we need to do some essential things.” One of the most important components of the transition, which should be essential for Romania, is electrification, because electrification, as part of the energy transition, is the key to making the projects implemented profitable.

“Perhaps we should redefine the energy transition so that we all understand it in the same way. Energy transition is a goal that all EU Member States have committed to. It means moving away from a system based on fossil-based production and consumption towards clean energy so that we move away from carbon emissions. This objective implies specific concerns for each actor in the energy system”, Bodea added.

Bodea also said that in Romania, energy consumption will increase, driven by electrification, and this will be mainly determined by citizens and private actors, not by the state.
