The association between Concelex and Bog’Art was selected by Nuclearelectrica to carry out complex works on the spent fuel intermediate storage facility (DICA) at CNE Cernavoda. The contract value amounts to 213.7 million lei and involves the construction of 6 spent fuel storage modules and a high-capacity portal crane.

We have demonstrated, in previous projects, quality and precision in environments with high technical and safety requirements. Our portfolio includes previous similar works for DICA; the construction of the only newly built hyperbolic cooling tower in Romania in the last 30 years, as well as numerous rehabilitations, modernizations and re-engineering for large energy companies. This know-how allows us to deliver with rigor and predictability”, stated Cătălin Vișan, Deputy General Manager, Concelex.
The new contract concluded with Nuclearelectrica involves the execution of modules 18 to 23 of DICA and their equipping with fuel storage cylinders and related elements, installation and fencing works, as well as the design, manufacture, assembly and testing of a gantry crane.

After being involved in the works to change the destination of the existing buildings on the Unit 5 site from that for a nuclear power plant to that for other useful support objectives during the lifetime of Units 1 and 2 in operation and the future Units 3 and 4 of the Cernavodã NPP, this new project marks a natural step in strengthening Bog’Art’s commitment to supporting critical investments for the energy sector, together with strong partners, in an ambitious schedule and with responsibility towards the community,” said Sorin Greu, Bog’Art’s General Manager.
The works start this month and will be carried out in stages, over a period of 10 years. The first module, 18, is planned to be completed by December 2026. The modules are made using MACSTOR 400 technology, which provides superior storage security and more efficient use of DICA capacity.
The expansion of the spent fuel intermediate storage facility at CNE Cernavoda comes in the context of the refurbishing project of Unit 1 CNE Cernavoda, which will extend its lifespan by another operating cycle (30 years), and the project of Units 3 and 4, which require additional storage capacities.
