Romania must host major nuclear projects, because it has been demonstrated that the choices regarding energy sources are and have always been correct in the long term, believes the president of the Romanian Atomic Forum – ROMATOM, Teodor Chirica, according to a press release.
“When we talk about the future of nuclear energy, we are talking about a national development platform, and we show respect for past achievements by decisively building the future. Romania must host major nuclear projects, because the history being written these days has demonstrated that Romania’s choices regarding energy sources are and have always been correct in the long term. Romania is not starting from scratch, but has ‘a real foundation’, built through industrial experience, research, operation and education. A leap in competitiveness is needed”, said Chirica, at the organization’s 2026 General Assembly, according to Agerpres.
According to the cited source, the development of nuclear projects must be correlated with the development of a strong local industrial base, with the training of human resources and with a more coherent relationship between industry, operator, authorities, research and universities.
During the same event, the General Assembly confirmed that Romania’s nuclear development must be viewed in connection with the European dynamics of the sector.
From the perspective of the Ministry of Energy, the Secretary of State, Cristian Bușoi, showed that Romania’s nuclear portfolio is advancing at a sustained pace and the country is “at a decisive moment”, especially with regard to small modular reactors (SMRs) and new nuclear units. “We need to strengthen the European supply chain and be more proactive in developing partnerships at European level”, said Bușoi, quoted in the press release.
This year’s General Assembly of the Romanian Atomic Forum – ROMATOM brought together representatives of the civil nuclear industry, public authorities, operators in the sector, academia, research and international partners, at a time when the Romanian nuclear program is entering a complex and demanding execution stage.
