Congestion in electrical networks and the increasing pressure on existing infrastructure is shifting the discussion from generation to complexity management, digitalization, and cybersecurity, said Mioara Brașoveanu, Executive Director of ABB Romania, at the Energy Strategy Summit 2026, organized by Energynomics.
“The discussion is no longer about generation, but about how we cope with this complexity… we need software and proper operation of the networks,” she stated.
In her view, the main current challenge is network congestion and the need to manage an increasingly interconnected and harder-to-control energy system. Solutions exist, but the real difference lies in the application method, and these must be implemented pragmatically, with a focus on results and operational efficiency.
A central element is the digitalization of energy infrastructure, particularly through asset management integration software and advanced monitoring solutions. Without these tools, the efficient operation of networks becomes difficult, especially in the context of increasing pressure on existing infrastructure. She also highlighted the importance of scalability in industrial and infrastructure projects, where success is no longer defined solely by the punctual implementation of a solution, but by its ability to be rapidly replicated on a large scale, which requires standardization and modularization.
Another essential point is cybersecurity, which is becoming an inseparable component of digitalization. As networks become more digitalized, exposure to risks increases, necessitating the adoption of “cyber secured proof” equipment certified by independent bodies. In this context, ABB has already developed solutions that comply with these requirements, including a low-voltage circuit breaker with a high level of cybersecurity, designed to meet the new demands of modern networks.
