Without investment, Romania risks falling behind in the energy transition

The energy transition brings many challenges and will change the entire energy sector, but it will also require substantial investments, as the grid is not prepared for this shift, said Ondrej Safar, Country Manager at EVRYO, at the 11th Energy Strategy Summit, the flagship event of Energynomics.

“With the new Commission, we ended a period of green transition that felt more like a religion, which actually discouraged many people. When we move past the ‘energy religion’ and focus on simple numbers and data, we see that the energy transition makes sense from a purely economic point of view. However, it also brings many challenges because the energy sector will change entirely,” he stated.

Within this transition, the role of large power generators will diminish, and the mix of consumed energy will shift. Traditional energy sources will increasingly migrate to electricity and renewables. But this change requires significant investment and carries many risks, if those investments are not made correctly, the costs could become much higher.

“The transition also requires courage from energy companies, to explain this shift to consumers, and from authorities, to incentivize the right investments. Romanians pay some of the highest energy prices because there has been little investment in the sector. That is why we struggle to connect more renewables and new technologies. Our grid is not prepared. Moreover, this is a major barrier to a successful energy transition. But if we don’t invest, we won’t remain competitive,” Safar added.

Many countries in Europe invest several times more in their energy grids than Romania does, and that is why they are much better prepared for this transition.
