Toki Power Holding GmbH, the clean energy trading and aggregation division of the Renalfa Solarpro group, completed the acquisition of a 150 MW standalone battery energy storage project in early December, marking one of the most significant BESS transactions recently announced in Romania. The transaction was closed on Friday, December 5, 2025, and the project is expected to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The storage system will initially have a discharge duration of two hours, with the possibility of extending it to four hours, and is designed to provide rapid flexibility services and network support at a time when the accelerated integration of renewable capacities is putting increasing pressure on the balancing of the power system. The company has not disclosed the financial details of the transaction.
The investment in Romania is part of a broader regional strategy through which Toki Power complements its trading and aggregation activities with its own flexible assets. The model has already been tested in Bulgaria, where the company has invested in a distributed portfolio of 110 MW of independent BESS systems with a storage duration of four hours, with the first projects coming online in October 2025. In this context, the project in Romania is seen as a natural step in expanding the group’s balancing capacities in Southeast Europe.
According to Toki Power, adding a large storage asset to its portfolio will let it offer a new generation of energy services to customers in Romania, from optimizing renewable energy production and maximizing value captured in energy markets to predictable delivery profiles for consumers affected by grid congestion. The company relies on the use of its digital platforms for real-time scheduling, forecasting, and automatic participation in day-ahead and intra-day markets, as well as balancing services and peak-shaving solutions for large industrial consumers.
“Romania is one of the most dynamic energy markets in the EU, and large-scale storage systems will play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid and supporting the accelerated implementation of renewable energy,” said Yuri Katanov, CEO of Toki Holding.
In turn, Aurel Mindrican, Toki Power’s director for Romania, emphasizes the importance of flexible assets in the current balancing market context. “Managing our own flexible assets and those of our partners allows us to offer top-notch balancing and route-to-market (energy management) services to renewable energy producers.”
At the regional level, Toki Power operates balancing groups exceeding 1.5 GW of installed capacity in photovoltaic, wind, and hydro production, to which approximately 1.3 GWh of operational battery storage capacity is added. The company is active in Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Romania, and Hungary, providing integrated route-to-market and optimization services for investors and energy asset owners.
Toki Power is part of Renalfa Solarpro Group, a leading investor in clean energy and e-mobility in Central and Eastern Europe. The group’s portfolio includes the EPC company Solarpro, the independent power producer Renalfa IPP, the electric vehicle charging network Eldrive, and the car-sharing platform Spark, all focused on electrifying the economy and accelerating the energy transition.
