Energy security is clearly in the spotlight, because whatever we do, “we must ensure the possibility of supplying consumers, because if we do not have energy to consumers, it is difficult to discuss anything else. It is also about the concept of resilience, which at first practically considered the supply of resources, and now networks have a main role, in principle due to their involvement in the integration of renewable sources and also in the management of energy to consumers with effects in the field of efficiency,” said Ion Lungu, president of CNR-CME, at SIREN 2025.

This year’s edition of SIREN had as its motto the resilient and just transition in the Romanian energy sector, announced Ion Lungu.

“The energy sector in Romania is in an extremely challenging period, determined by the transition from an energy based mainly on exhaustible fossil fuels to an energy entirely from renewable sources, to which is added a rather complicated geopolitical situation and I am considering, first of all, the continuation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which, unfortunately, shows no signs of ending in the very short term, and also the situation generated by the new approaches of the United States administration.

“This transition was also accompanied by a diversification of supply sources, mainly the abandonment of primary sources in Russia, a diversification that was achieved almost entirely, but at quite high costs. At the same time, other challenges have emerged. Energy security is obviously at the center of attention, because whatever we do, we must ensure the possibility of supplying consumers, because if we do not have energy for consumers, it is difficult to discuss anything else. It is also about the concept of resilience, which at first practically considered the supply of resources, and now the networks have a main role, in principle due to their involvement in the integration of renewable sources and also in the management of energy to consumers with effects in the field of efficiency,” said Ion Lungu.

According to the cited source, at the European level, it seems that we are witnessing a new tension between autonomy, the energy freedom of countries and interdependence.

“And here we have news every day about the things imposed by the European Union, what we have to do, that we have our own energy and should have the best prices. This new pressure appeared at the moment when it was found that energy deficits have a relatively high and increasing price. It is also worth considering that an increase in electricity consumption is estimated, a significant increase even by the end of this decade, an increase basically due to the increase in demand, especially for data storage and everything that artificial intelligence means, due to electric transport, new industrial developments,” Ion Lungu stated, according to Financialintelligence.

“We must not forget about cybersecurity, which is a huge challenge and it seems that many things can happen if we do not treat them with great care. In all these things, we must also consider the need for greater flexibility of the system, by all means. Because we have energy at a certain point, but not having it when we need it and where we need it, we still have big problems. And last but not least, we must pay much greater attention to the chronology and paths to follow in this transition. If it is generally accepted that the targets are correct, the same has not happened with the way in which certain stages have been completed and what awaits us.”

The Romanian Energy Symposium – SIREN 2025, with the theme “Resilient and Just Transition for the Romanian Energy Sector”, was organized between 22 and 24 September 2025, in Bucharest, by the Romanian National Committee of the World Energy Council (CNR-WEC), under the aegis of the Ministry of Energy. The main topics addressed within SIREN 2025: strategies and policies for the energy transition, investment programs in the energy field, new technologies in the energy field and trade policies, market and consumers.
