A total of 1,209 electric vehicles were registered in March 2026, 93% more than the same month last year, according to a market analysis conducted by one of the most important players in the field of electric mobility in Romania.

Data centralized by Lektri.Co shows that this growth comes against the backdrop of a diversifying market: Tesla dominated the ranking, BYD placed three models in the top 10, and Dacia Spring remained in the top five positions, according to Agerpres.

Of the total 47,068 vehicles registered in March 2026 (regardless of engine), electric vehicles represented 2.57%. Of the 1,209 registered EVs, 1,160 are passenger cars and 49 are electric vans. After the decrease of 188 deregistrations, the net balance of the month remains at 1,021 electric vehicles.

“The electric car market in Romania is going through a period of solid and consistent growth. March data confirms a trend that is consolidating year after year – demand is increasing, supply is diversifying, and the adoption of electric vehicles is becoming more natural among consumers. We estimate that this dynamic will accelerate during 2026,” said Claudiu Suma, CEO of Lektri.Co.

At the top of the March ranking was the Tesla Model 3 (146 units), followed by the Tesla Model Y (107 units). In 3rd place was the Ford Puma (63 units), followed by the Dacia Spring (61 units) and the BYD Dolphin Surf (57 units). The BYD Sealion 7 (54 units) confirmed that the Chinese brand is no longer an episodic presence on the Romanian market.

Just behind the top five, the Hyundai Kona (47 units) remained one of the market’s stable constants, followed by the Ford Explorer (31 units). The BYD Atto 2, Renault Zoe and Volkswagen ID.4 each recorded 29 units, forming a dense and competitive mid-range segment.

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric and Tesla Model S each brought in 24 units, while the MG4 (17 units) and Volvo EX30 (17 units) completed the mid-range of the ranking.

The lower segment of the top 40 reflected the increasing diversity of the offer available on the local market. The BYD Seal (16 units), MG ZS EV (14 units), Ford Capri (13 units), Mazda 6e (12 units), Hyundai Inster and Peugeot E-2008 (11 units each) confirmed that demand is evenly distributed across multiple price and category segments. Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia Niro EV, Leapmotor T03 and Mercedes-Benz CLA ended the month with 9-10 units each, while the premium and utility areas maintained their presence through models such as BMW i4, Skoda Enyaq and Ford Transit Custom.

At the level of the electric car fleet, Dacia remains the leader in local electrification, with 18,694 units (27.82% of the total), followed by Tesla with 11,851 units (17.64%). Volkswagen, Renault and Hyundai complete the first five positions, with shares between 6% and 8%.

According to the analysis, the second ring of the ecosystem is made up of brands with a consolidated presence in the national fleet. Mercedes-Benz ranks 6th with 2,834 units (4.22%), followed by BMW with 2,568 (3.82%) and Ford with 2,322 (3.46%). Nissan (1,349 units) and Peugeot (1,117 units) complete the top 10.

The 11-20 area illustrates the extent to which the market has broadened its base. BYD reached 1,072 active units, confirming a steady upward trajectory, along with Skoda (1,068), Smart (959), Audi (890) and Volvo (791). Brands such as Kia (647), MG (637), Fiat (625), Mini (574) and Citroën (496) close the top 20, providing a picture of an increasingly diverse and balanced electric car fleet in terms of brand distribution.

Charging infrastructure continues to support the growth of the electric car fleet. The major operators in Romania – including Renovatio e-Charge, Eldrive, PPC Blue, E.ON Drive, Mol Plugee, EVConnect, Plugpoint and OMV-Petrom – continue installing new charging points, maintaining a sustained pace of expansion.
