in the first six months of this year, compared to 2025, a margin in which 100% electric cars (BEV) recorded a jump of 76.6% and a total market share of 8.5%, according to data published on Monday by the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers of Romania (APIA).

Figures based on statistics from the General Directorate of Driving Licenses and Registrations (DGPCI) show that cars (which represent approximately 84% of the total market) recorded a volume of 16,008 units in June 2026, 53% more than in the same period the previous year, according to Agerpres.

In terms of market share, the SUV segment is in first position, with a share of 58.5%, followed by Class C (21%) and Class B (12.8%).

Depending on the type of fuel of the registered cars, at mid-year, gasoline engines increased by 45%, to a share of 31%, while those on diesel recorded a decrease of 25.7%, to 4.4%.

The cited data reveal that cars equipped with mild-hybrid engines recorded an increase of 29.7% and reached a share of 24% of the total car market. “It is worth noting that, of the total mild-hybrid engines, 79% are gasoline engines, while 10% are LPG engines and 11% are diesel engines”, notes APIA.

On the other hand, “electrified” cars, namely electric cars (which can be charged from an external source of electricity – BEV and PHEV), as well as mild-hybrid and full hybrid cars (which also have electric propulsion without charging from an external source of electricity) hold, in June 2026, a market share of 64%, being the most important segment on the Romanian market, which exceeds the share held by gasoline and diesel engines.

Also, in the analyzed period, full electric cars hold a share of 9.4%, up from 3.7%, and plug-in hybrid cars a market share of 9.6%, compared to June 2025, when they represented 6.7%.

In 2026, the top three best-selling 100% electric cars are: Tesla Model Y – with 793 units and an increase of 378%, Tesla Model 3 (with 648 units) and BYD Dolphin Surf (457 units).

In the plug-in car segment, the top is led by: BYD Seal U – with 494 units, followed by Chery Tiggo 9 – with 352 units, and Toyota RAV4 – with 342 units.

Hybrid cars, without recharging from external sources, are led by Toyota Corolla – with 2,390 units and an increase of 51%, from one year to another, then Toyota Yaris Cross – with 1,357 units, and Dacia Duster (1,301 units).

At the same time, among mild hybrid cars, the Dacia Duster model is the first in new registrations with 1,553 units (-55% compared to June 2025), followed by Skoda Octavia – with 915 units, and Dacia Bigster – with 756 units.

Light commercial vehicles and minibuses recorded, in June 2026, an increase of 2% compared to June 2025, of which light commercial vehicles without minibuses reported an increase of 10.9%. On the other hand, electric light commercial vehicles reached, in the first six months of 2026, a volume of 257 units, compared to the 333 units, in the same period last year.

Official statistics show that registrations of heavy commercial vehicles and buses increased by 35% in June this year, compared to the same period in 2025, of which heavy commercial vehicles over 16 tons plus tractors recorded an increase of 22.8%.
