The average price of fuel for personal transport in the European Union rose by 23.8% in August 2026 compared to August 2025, following increases of 16.9% in July and 13.7% in June, according to data published on Tuesday by Eurostat.
According to the European statistical office, fuel prices were higher in August 2026 than in August of the previous year in 26 of the 27 EU member states. Furthermore, 18 member states recorded year-on-year increases of over 20% in the prices of fuels and lubricants.
The steepest price increases within the bloc were recorded in Bulgaria (34.5%), Lithuania (28.8%), Finland (27.6%), Germany (27.5%), France (27.4%), and Romania (26.7%). At the other end of the spectrum, the smallest increases were recorded in Hungary (1.3%), Sweden (6.1%), and Ireland (11.7%).
In Romania”s case, the 26.7% year-on-year increase in August follows rises of 24.2% in July and 23.1% in June, according to Agerpres.
Month-on-month, EU consumers saw diesel prices rise by an average of 8.3% and petrol prices increase by 3.3% in August. This follows a rise in prices in July 2026, when diesel prices increased by 4.3% and petrol prices by 4.7% compared to June 2026.
According to Eurostat, diesel prices rose in 26 EU member states in August 2026 compared to the previous month. The largest increases occurred in the Czech Republic (14.3%), Bulgaria (13.5%), and Luxembourg (12.3%). Conversely, the smallest price increases were recorded in Italy (5.2%) and Romania (6.1%).
Regarding petrol prices, 22 countries saw price hikes, three member states recorded price drops, and prices remained stable in two countries in August compared to July. The highest increases were recorded in Spain (8.2%) and Romania (6.6%). Slight price decreases were noted in Hungary (-0.6%), Denmark (-0.3%), and Slovakia (-0.1%).
