Rockwool, a leader in the production of basalt wool insulation solutions, organized an event at its factory in Ariceștii Rahtivani, Prahova County, to mark the start of the 150 million euro investment in Romania, for the construction of a fully independent production line that will more than double the factory’s basalt wool production by the end of 2027.
The new unit will use a state-of-the-art technology, based on the melting of volcanic rock using an electric furnace. This production line will significantly reduce emissions and accelerate the company’s transition to decarbonization, further strengthening Rockwool’s commitment to sustainability and the circular economy. With this investment, Rockwool reaffirms its position as a key player in the insulation materials market in the region and aligns its operations with the European Union’s energy transition objectives.
“The 150 million euro investment reflects our confidence in the potential of the local and regional market and allows us to consolidate our leading position in the insulation sector. Our decision has proven even more necessary in the context of major legislative changes. With the entry into force in May of the new fire safety regulation P118/1-2025, which requires the increased use of non-combustible materials in the insulation of facades and roofs, the relevance and importance of Rockwool solutions – well-known for their non-combustible nature – are now even more evident. At the same time, Romania’s real estate stock remains largely unrenovated, with most programs covering less than 10% of existing buildings. This highlights the urgent need for safe and efficient solutions, and Rockwool’s investment in the new line will directly support this demand. In addition, the expansion will create jobs and strengthen Romania’s role as a regional hub for South-Eastern Europe,” said Florin Popescu, Regional Director Rockwool Balkans.
Rockwool basalt wool insulation products are classified as A1 products, are completely non-combustible and can withstand temperatures of over 1,000 °C, contributing to the safety of buildings and the protection of human life. In addition, they are produced by melting volcanic rocks, which makes them inherently sustainable: a natural raw material abundant in nature and infinitely recyclable.

Active in Romania since 1998, the first production line in Romania was inaugurated in 2019, in Ariceștii Rahtivani, Prahova, with an investment of EUR 50 million. This is the largest unit in the country, with a capacity of 45,000 tons/year.
