The Republic of Moldova is entering a state of emergency, announced on Thursday the President Maia Sandu, who asked in the morning of the Parliament to validate the decision.

Against the background of the conflict in Ukraine, the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) of the Republic of Moldova has increased the prices of fuels, which have reached new record levels, according to local media. According to ANRE-M, gasoline and diesel prices rose on February 24 and will increase on February 25. Thus, a liter of gasoline will cost 24.34 Moldovan lei on Friday (1.22 euros, +0.04 compared to the previous day), and a liter of diesel will cost 21.03 Moldovan lei (1.05 euros, +0.02%). At the same time, the Moldovan leu appreciated weakly against the euro and the dollar.

“This morning, Russia launched attacks on the neighboring country, in flagrant violation of international law. I asked the Parliament to declare a state of emergency and I convened the Supreme Council of National Defense,” announced the president Maia Sandu.

She urged citizens of the Republic of Moldova in Ukraine to return home, saying that traffic is expected to increase at border crossings, and that Moldova is ready to receive tens of thousands of refugees.

“Our institutions are setting up information centers. We are ready to accommodate tens of thousands of people. We have more scenarios ready if we have a larger influx of refugees. In this context, I ask the citizens to be understanding,” the head of state also said.
