PPC Renewables Romania, the largest private investor in renewable energy in Romania, will develop a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 60.12 MWh within the Sălbatica 1 wind farm. The project has a value of 68.2 million lei, of which an amount of approximately 9.87 million lei will be provided by European financing, through the Modernization Fund.

The project is part of PPC Renewables Romania’s plan to expand the renewable energy portfolio with projects that can contribute to reducing the production capacity deficit in Romania and to the stability of the system, through the predictable production profile ensured by the storage of electricity in batteries.

Located in the South-East Region, UAT Valea Nucarilor, Tulcea County, the Sălbatica 1 and Sălbatica 2 wind farms total a total of 70 modern turbines of 2 MW each, divided equally between the two farms. Following the commissioning, the BESS system will contribute to the development of electricity storage capacities in the National Electroenergetic System and the increase of the flexibility and efficiency of energy produced from renewable sources.

In addition to the development of the storage system, the project involves the construction of the necessary infrastructure elements, the arrangement of exploitation, access and fencing roads, the implementation of safety lighting and monitoring systems, as well as the area arranged for operation, maintenance and security and the organization of the construction site.

The project benefits from financing through the Modernization Fund – Supporting investments in the development of electricity storage capacities (batteries) connected to an existing renewable energy production facility. The investment amounts to a total value of approximately 68 million lei. The maximum value insured from the Modernization Fund is 28.24% of the eligible expenses, respectively 9.87 million lei, and the value insured by PPC Renewables Romania is approximately 58 million lei.
