Poland will appeal to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) against the EU ban on the sale of new vehicles with combustion engines from 2035 in the coming days, Polish Environment Minister Anna Moskwa announced on Monday, Reuters reports.

Plans to reduce CO2 emissions from new vans and cars by 100% by 2035 are part of a wider package to combat climate change – the so-called “Fit for 55” package, which , in turn, is part of the European Green Deal. The EU wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, compared to the 1990 level, and reach climate neutrality by 2050, according to Agerpres.

Poland was the only country that consistently opposed the proposal and voted against the regulation because there would be no adequate analysis of the market and the social consequences of the ban.

“We do not agree with this regulation and other documents from the package to combat climate change (Fit for 55) and we will challenge them at the European Court of Justice in the coming days. We hope that other countries will join us,” Moskwa said on the Zet radio station.
