Warsaw authorities announced on Monday that they have terminated the agreement with Russia on the supply of natural gas through the Yamal gas pipeline, after Poland rejected the request to pay in rubles for fuel supplied by Russia, and Moscow responded by interrupting gas supplies at the end of April, Reuters reports.

Polish Environment Minister Anna Moskwa, who announced the decision on Twitter on Monday, told the PAP news agency that the Warsaw authorities’ decision did not affect German gas supplies to Poland via the Yamal pipeline, which is operated by a Polish company.

Poland had previously planned not to extend the Russian gas supply contract, which was due to expire at the end of 2022. Polish gas group PGNiG had told Russia’s Gazprom group in 2019 that it would not renew the contract.

“Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has upheld the Polish government’s determination to become completely independent of Russian gas. We have always known that Gazprom is not a reliable partner,” Anna Moskwa told Agerpres.

Gazprom announced in late April the suspension of gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland after EU member states refused to pay their gas bills in rubles, as Vladimir Putin had demanded.

Anna Moskwa said the termination of the contract was a natural decision after Russia breached the contract by stopping deliveries.
