Energy independence must remain Romania’s strategic objective, and the government supports both renewable energy production, including offshore wind power plants, and investments in civil nuclear power, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă said at the Gala where the energy industry celebrated the winners of the 10th Energynomics Awards.

“We are committed to the green transition through renewable energy, which is included in the national strategy (…) The government supports investments in renewable energy and investments in new technologies such as energy storage batteries or hydrogen production,” Ciucă said.

He recalled that Romania has concluded an agreement with the US for the development of nuclear reactors 3 and 4 at Cernavodă, for which Romania will contract 3 billion dollars in financing from the US Export-Import Bank, as well as for the development of a small modular reactor (SMR), which is also financed by the US, with 14 million dollars for the preliminary engineering and design phase.

According to Ciucă, the SMR project will help Romania to achieve its decarbonization targets towards Brussels.

The second phase of the nuclear reactors 3 and 4 project will start next year and end in 2025, with the third phase to be completed in 2030.

At the same time, the government will use the experience gained in offshore gas extraction to create a medium and long-term legislative framework for investment in offshore wind power plants in the Black Sea.
