Romania delivered gas to Moldova in October, before signing a new agreement with Gazprom, helping the neighboring country maintain deliveries, said Natalia Gavriliță, Moldova’s prime minister, during yesterday’s meeting with Romanian counterpart Nicolae Ciuca in Bucharest.
“In the context of the energy crisis, Romania again jumped to the aid of the Republic of Moldova, the gas delivered in October helping us to maintain the pressure in the system, against the background of the limitations of the gas volumes we faced. Also, due to the completion of the natural gas transmission pipeline Iași – Ungheni – Chisinau, the Republic of Moldova will be able to take important steps in ensuring independence and energy security,” said Gavriliță.
“An absolute priority is to achieve the interconnection of energy systems between Romania and the Republic of Moldova by 2024,” she said, adding that this would lead to strengthening the independence and energy security of the Republic of Moldova.
The talks included energy interconnection, the development of the bilateral relationship in the area of infrastructure projects, the reduction of roaming tariffs and the signing of a new financial assistance contract from Romania worth 100 million euro.
“We have a historic chance to turn the language community into a community of great projects for the benefit of the people on both banks of the Prut, by building new bridges literally and figuratively, whether we are talking about interconnection in the energy sphere or talking about connecting the transport infrastructure in the Republic of Moldova to the European networks, whether we lay the foundations for facilitating telecommunications,” said Natalia Gavriliță.
