A team of specialists of Liberty Galați recently completed a modernization project that reduces both the energy consumption of liquid cast iron manufacturing in Furnace no. 5 as well as carbon emissions, the company announced.

The project, carried out by specialists in blast furnaces, automation and project managers consists in the fact that the air injected into the blast furnace is no longer preheated using the classic mixture of blast furnace gas and methane gas, but an optimized mix of oxygen-enriched air, blast furnace gas and less methane gas, the volume of the latter being reduced by at least 75%, compared to the old solution.

In the new system, lines have been made that inject, in a controlled and safe way, oxygen into the combustion air used in the air preheaters of Furnace no.5. This equipment is fully automated and equipped with state-of-the-art safety, measurement and control elements.

“This type of project, which continues our modernization process, shows the high level of technical excellence of the unit specialists, as well as the concern to strengthen our energy efficiency and to continuously improve our environmental performance. We continue to work on similar projects, which we’ll implement throughout the company,” said Bogdan Grecu, general manager of Liberty Galati.
