On March 25, 2026, Hidroelectrica completed the procurement procedure for the supply of 7 216 MVA, 15.75/242 kV transformers, equipment necessary both for the safe operation and for the continuation of the modernization process of one of the most important electricity production capacities in Romania, the Portile de Fier I Hydroelectric Power Plant, the company announced.

The open tender procedure, with an estimated value of 118,328,517.54 lei excluding VAT, was initiated on September 23, 2025 and was carried out through the Electronic Public Procurement System (SEAP). Following the evaluation of the offers, the contract was awarded to Siemens Energy SRL, which obtained the maximum score and submitted a financial offer with a value of 117,138,785.96 lei excluding VAT.

The acquisition is part of the company’s investment program to modernize the equipment and maintain the technical performance of the Porțile de Fier I Hydroelectric Power Plant, the most important production unit in Hidroelectrica’s portfolio.

“The modernization and consolidation of the energy infrastructure is a strategic priority for Hidroelectrica. The acquisition of these high-power transformers for Porțile de Fier I is part of the company’s constant effort to ensure the reliability of the installations, to increase operational efficiency and to maintain the highest safety standards in the exploitation of vital energy objectives for SEN. We continue to invest in modern technologies and in projects that directly contribute to Romania’s energy security”, stated Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica.

The Porțile de Fier I Hydroelectric Power Plant is one of Hidroelectrica’s most important production units, contributing significantly to the company’s total electricity generation. Located on the Danube River, the plant has an installed capacity of approximately 1,166 MW on the Romanian side, making it the largest hydroelectric power plant operated by Hidroelectrica. Under normal hydrological conditions, it can produce an average of 4 to 5 TWh of electricity annually, representing an important component of the company’s total production. The size and role of this capacity in Hidroelectrica’s production structure mean that the modernization and maintenance of the technical performance of its equipment remains a priority in the company’s investment programs.

We recall that Hidroelectrica is the largest producer of electricity from renewable sources in Romania and one of the most important players in the energy sector in South-Eastern Europe. With a portfolio of over 6.3 GW of installed capacity in hydropower plants, combined with the Crucea wind farm, the company contributes to national energy security and to achieving the decarbonization objectives established by EU policies.
