Genesis Biopartner continues to strengthen its presence in the renewable energy sector, with two new biomass-to-energy projects set for completion this summer. Both plants are strategically located close to major urban centers – Craiova and Timisoara – and will contribute to diversify the local energy mix by capitalizing on organic resources.

Horia Bărdeanu, General Manager of Genesis Biopartner, outlined the company’s vision for the circular economy during a fireside chat at the 11th Energy Strategy Summit, the flagship event of Energynomics.: “Our vision is to recycle biodegradable waste. We produce both green fuels and electricity. That is, at least until we can get biogas by-products, such as biomethane or bio-LNG, to be able to supply our customers with green gas.”

The direction reflects a pragmatic and evolutionary approach: the company aims to build on its current experience in cogeneration and green fuel production, while preparing the future transition to biomethane and bio-LNG – products with higher added value and strategic relevance in the context of decarbonization.

Genesis Biopartner has gone through a significant transformation in its raw material source. Initially, the company relied on agricultural land for biomass, but this strategy has been abandoned in favor of a more sustainable and effective solution. The feedstock is now biodegradable organic waste, which not only reduces pressure on agricultural land, but also helps solve a major environmental problem – waste management.

The result of this strategic repositioning is a doubling of biogas production capacity. “Thus, the company has doubled its biogas production capacity and now reaches 1,000 cubic meters of biogas per hour,” explains Bărdeanu. This is a significant leap that shows how optimizing feedstock flows can generate remarkable industrial performance.

However, there is no shortage of challenges. “The main challenge has always been securing raw materials. There is still room in the market for such projects, because there are huge amounts of waste being generated but not valorized,” he added. In a market in transition, consistent access to sufficient volumes of biodegradable waste remains a critical success factor. While the potential is huge, the development of collection infrastructure and recovery mechanisms is still insufficient.

In addition, the legislative framework continues to be a major obstacle to the development of this segment. The lack of regulatory predictability can hold back investment and put pressure on the expansion plans of companies interested in contributing to the energy transition. This uncertainty affects not only operational planning but also the investment attractiveness of the sector as a whole.

With the investments now in the final phase, Genesis Biopartner reaffirms its commitment to turn biodegradable waste from a problem into a resource and to contribute to national and European decarbonization and energy efficiency targets.
