Energy prices may fall in the near future because Romania has had a mild winter with good temperatures, which is why it has extracted less gas from storage compared to last year, but not if the level of demand will remain high, said George Niculescu, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Energy.

“The question of gas and electricity prices in the near future is not an easy one. It is a matter of supply and demand and if demand remains high in the near future prices will not go down, but due to the fact that so far we have had a mild winter, a mild winter season, with good temperatures, which made us take a smaller amount of gas from the gas depots – if we compare it with last year’s gas extraction – a lower gas consumption means that gas and energy prices could fall in the near future as a result of this consumption trend,” George Niculescu was quoted as saying by Agerpres.

The Minister of Energy, Virgil Popescu, also stated earlier that, in his opinion, after April 1, we will witness a decrease in the price of natural gas, naturally supported by the decrease in consumption and the warming of the weather, while “geopolitical games on the gas market will not be so obvious.”

“After April 1st, the weather is practically starting to warm up, probably the geopolitical games on the gas market will not be so obvious anymore. I think we will see a drop in the price of gas, natural in the end: lower consumption, warming weather, which will bring a correction in the price of electricity, but not at the level of last year or two years ago. We are watching the market very closely to find out what we will do after April 1,” said Popescu.
