ENGIE Romania announces its intention to develop two major battery energy storage projects in Galați and Sibiu counties, thus contributing to the modernization of the national energy system and achieving the ENGIE Group’s global objective of reaching an installed capacity of 95 GW in renewable energy and storage by 2030.

Galați – Battery energy storage system located near the wind farm

The first project will be implemented within the operational wind farm in Băleni commune, Galați county, which has an installed capacity of 50 MW.

The battery system will have a power of 5 MW and a storage capacity of 10 MWh, allowing the delivery of energy to the grid for two hours at maximum capacity, through LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology, recognized for its durability and safety. The configuration will also allow the delivery time to be extended from 2 to 4 hours, depending on future grid requirements.

The system is designed to take over the surplus energy when production exceeds the grid capacity and to provide mainly system services (frequency regulation, balancing, etc.) and balancing services for the wind farm.

Construction works are planned to start in the first quarter of next year, and commissioning is estimated for summer 2026.

Sibiu – Important project for energy storage and grid optimization

The second project will be located in Șelimbăr, Sibiu County. ENGIE Romania recently acquired the rights to the project, and construction works are planned to start in November 2025.

With an installed capacity of 80 MW and a storage capacity of 160 MWh, the project represents a significant investment in the central area of the country. The system will be built on a plot of approximately 2 hectares and will use LFP technology, ensuring operational stability and security. ENGIE is also analyzing a potential extension of the storage duration from 2h to 4h.

The project is in the “Ready-to-Build” stage, with all the necessary permits to start work. Commercial operation is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

With the increasing need for advanced grid flexibility solutions, battery energy storage systems play an essential role in balancing supply and demand and strengthening Romania’s energy security.

Both projects will be able to deliver electricity to the grid for two hours at maximum capacity, thus contributing to improving its stability and reducing imbalances.

“Flexibility solutions, such as battery energy storage, are becoming essential for the stability and resilience of the energy system. The two projects strengthen ENGIE’s position as a trusted partner in the energy transition and reaffirm our commitment to a sustainable and decarbonized future. In addition, we have initiatives planned that will bring our total installed battery storage capacity to approximately 300 MW by 2030,” said Cristian Buzan, Vice President of ENGIE Romania.
