Electricity rose the most in January, by 59% year-on-year

    Electricity rose the most in January, by 59.33% year-on-year, but it became slightly cheaper compared to the previous month, by 0.44%, while significant increases were also recorded for cocoa and coffee, with an annual increase of 25.27%, as well as for rail transport, by 24.40%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics.

    In the food category, price increases were also recorded for fresh fruit, with an increase of 17.14% in January 2026 compared to January 2025. Price decreases, from one year to another, were recorded for potatoes, by 10.77%, for beans and other legumes, by 3.52%. From one month to the next, in January, the highest price increases were recorded for other vegetables and canned vegetables, by 4.26%, and for vegetables and canned vegetables, by 3.58%. Discounts were recorded for sheep’s cheese (telemea), by 0.06%, as well as for cornmeal, by 0.03%, according to Agerpres.

    As for non-food goods, the top price increases are electricity and thermal energy, the latter registering an annual increase of 15.61%, as well as books, newspapers and magazines, by 10.10%. No price decreases were recorded at an annual rate. Compared to the previous month, the highest price increases were recorded for fuels, by 1.82%, and for tobacco and cigarettes, by 1.17%. Prices were reduced by 0.82% for gas and by 0.44% for electricity.

    In the services sector, the most significant price increases were recorded for rail transport, which rose by 24.40% in the last year, for water, sewerage and sanitation by 17.59%, and for hygiene and cosmetic services by 17.75%. In contrast, postal services fell by 3.44%.

    From one month to the next, in January, significant price increases were recorded for air transport, with rates increasing by 9.78%, and for water, sewerage and sanitation services by 9.08%. In contrast, urban transport subscriptions fell by 0.16%.
