Romania’s primary energy resources and electricity resources increased, in the first five months of this year, by 5.7% and 3.4%, respectively, compared to the similar period in 2024, and final electricity consumption registered an advance of 1.3%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Thus, the main primary energy resources, during the period January 1 – May 31, 2025, totaled 13.519 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), an increase of 726,900 toe compared to the same period last year, according to Agerpres.
Domestic production amounted to 6.906 million toe, down 342,000 toe (-4.7%) compared to the period January 1 – May 31, 2024, and imports were 6.612 million toe, up 1.068 million toe (+19.3%).
During this period, electricity resources totaled 28.809 billion kWh, up 945.9 million kWh compared to the period from January 1 to May 31, 2024.
The production from thermal power plants was 6.994 billion kWh, down 6.3 million kWh (-0.1%), while the production from hydroelectric power plants was 5.177 billion kWh, down 2.068 billion kWh (-28.5%), and that from nuclear power plants reached 4.602 billion kWh, down 74.4 million kWh (-1.6%).
At the same time, the production of wind power plants in the first five months of 2025 was 2.616 billion kWh, down by 446.7 million kWh compared to the same period of the previous year, and the solar energy produced in photovoltaic installations exceeded 1.619 billion kWh, up by 394.4 million kWh, year-on-year.
According to INS data, from January to the end of May 2025, the final consumption of electricity was 20.912 billion kWh, 1.3% higher than the period from January 1 to May 31, 2024, while the final consumption of electricity in the economy remained at the same level.
Regarding the population’s consumption of electricity, it increased in the analyzed period by 5.7%, while public lighting recorded a decrease of 8.4%.
INS data shows that electricity exports reached 5.723 billion kWh, an increase of 771.9 million kWh compared to the same period in 2024.
