The steel sector shows signs of recovery, supported by the resumption of industrial production and the initiation of infrastructure projects. A report by the World Steel Association estimates an increase of 5.8% for global steel demand this year, and this trend on the international market is also reflected locally, within the Donalam plant in Calarasi, the company says.

“Donalam, one of the leading players in the hot-rolled steel and special steel bars industry in Europe, has seen an increase in product demand since the beginning of the year. In order to be able to honor the orders received in due time, the company started a process of recruiting over 50 new employees,” say the Donalam officials.

“With the relaunch of production in industrial sectors, the need for steel products is growing, given the diversity of industries in which steel is used as a raw material – oil & gas, cars and agricultural equipment, construction, etc. This thawing of orders on the international market is also felt in the number of new orders we received in a relatively short period, Donalam being the only plant in the country that produces and sells round hot rolled steel profiles. The challenge at the moment is to be able to meet the high demand, so we focus on recruiting staff to increase our operational and production capacity,” said Enrico Deganello, director of the plant Donalam Calarasi.

With over 270 employees, Donalam is one of the largest employers in Calarasi County. In 2021, the company estimates a turnover of over 630 million lei, more than double, as compared to last year. The factory annually exports about 120,000 tons of steel bars to the European market. Donalam currently has an ongoing investment of over 11 million euros started last year for the modernization of the rolling mill within the steel plant.
