The price of diesel has risen for the third week in a row, this time by around 0.2%, at Petrom stations monitored by energynomics.ro in eight major cities of Romania: Bucharest, Iasi, Timisoara, Cluj-Napoca, Brasov, Oradea, Constanta and Craiova. In the same interval, the average price of Petrom’s standard gasoline rose by 0.59%.

In the case of diesel, in four cities, prices remained at the same levels as on January 21, while in the other four prices rose by about half a percentage point. As a result, prices tend to equalize to close to 5.5 lei per liter. The most expensive diesel is sold in Bucharest and Brasov (5.57 lei/liter), and the cheapest in Constanţa (5.31 lei/liter).

In four of the monitored cities, Petrom’s gasoline is more expensive than last week, with the biggest advance (1.22%) in the station in Constanta; however, the price stays there under 5 lei/liter. The gasoline in Bucharest stays near 5,11 lei/liter, while the highest price among the monitored eight are in Brasov and Craiova (5.12 lei/liter).

Since January 1, the prices for car fuels have increased following the entry into force of two normative acts: indexation of excises with the inflation rate, respectively the increase of the mandatory content of biofuels in gasoline and diesel. Another important factor is the decline suffered by the Romanian currency; since the beginning of the year the leu lost more than 2% compared to the euro, and more than 3% compared to the dollar, according to the NBR exchange rate.

Over the last week, crude oil prices in international markets have declined by almost 2% in case of WTI (52.96 dollars per barrel, today), and by almost 3% in case of Brent (60.78 dollars per barrel, today).

In 2019, energynomics.ro will monitor the evolution of prices for gasoline and diesel sold at Petrom stations in eight major cities in Romania: Bucharest, Iasi, Timisoara, Cluj-Napoca, Brasov, Oradea, Constanta and Craiova.
