Cluj County launches first Waste-to-Power waste molecular disintegration station in Romania

    A new molecular disintegration system worth 12 million euros, provided by Waste Powertech, will ensure the necessary electricity for all institutions subordinate to the Cluj County Council (CJ): industrial parks, airport, water company, schools and kindergartens, announced the president of Cluj County Council, Alin Tișe, according to Transilvania Business.

    “We are the first in Romania to produce green energy from garbage, a 100% Romanian invention, which involves the process of molecular disintegration. What we produce here is entirely green: the processed garbage disappears. The energy produced will be utilized in different ways: filters can be made from the remaining coal, and the leachate will be purified. We will make money from garbage: the energy produced will be utilized and we will fully cover the consumption of subordinate institutions – schools, kindergartens, the airport, the water company, industrial parks.

    “We will also use the remaining ash, which will be transformed into filters with which we will purify the leachate, but also the gas with which we will feed the osmosis station through which we will fully utilize the leachate, transformed into distilled water. Cluj now produces energy, light from garbage, 60,000 tons of garbage that will be processed through these technologies. This modular factory will be able to add other reactors, so that the entire amount of waste from our county and from neighboring Transylvania can be processed here”, announced the president of the Cluj County Council, Alin Tișe.

    “We have fundamentally changed the paradigm of waste storage and recovery, as waste is no longer a simple residue and an expense, but a valuable resource from which we obtain green, clean energy for the people of Cluj. By implementing this 100% Romanian state-of-the-art technical solution, to which we have given the necessary endorsement following an in-depth analysis, we have taken a decisive step towards a green future and an increasingly higher quality of life for the people of Cluj, amid the reduction of pollution.

    “This innovative project represents an example of good practice and a model worth following. We hope that it will be taken up and replicated by other local administrations in Romania, which are facing significant challenges related to waste management,” according to the Cluj County Council.

    The new, fully automated waste disintegration station, within the premises of the Integrated Waste Management Center (CMID) Cluj, will significantly reduce the quantities of waste remaining after the process of sorting recyclables and mechanical-biological treatment.

    The investment in the construction, installation and commissioning of this facility, with an initial processing capacity of 25,000 tons of residual waste per year, amounted to 60 million lei, with financing being provided from the Cluj County Council’s own funds.

    In the following period, the processing capacity will be increased to 60,000 tons/year of residual waste, exceeding the amount of waste produced annually at the county level remaining after sorting recyclable materials and mechanical-biological treatment.

    In this way, waste stored in the first cell of the CMID and those in the temporary ramp managed by the Cluj-Napoca City Hall will also be recovered. The technological process of the station provided by the company Waste Powertech involves going through the crushing stage to a granulation of less than 25 mm and drying to a humidity of less than 20%. Subsequently, the waste is introduced into the station’s reactor to go through the chemical decomposition stage into simpler elements (molecular disintegration).

    “We have marked a moment that is not only about technology, but also about vision. We have put into operation the first station in Romania that transforms waste into green energy, a real step towards a cleaner and more responsible future. The energy produced will power entire communities, and what was once a problem, waste, becomes part of the solution,” according to Waste Powertech.
