The opening of the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIB) office in London marks an important step in the strategy to connect the Romanian business environment to major global investment flows. At a time when economic relations between Romania and the United Kingdom are undergoing a necessary recalibration, this permanent presence in London creates a point of support for entrepreneurs, investors, and institutional dialogue. The launch event, organized with the support of the Romanian Embassy in the United Kingdom, brought together diplomats, business people, and representatives of the Romanian community active in the British economic environment.

In her opening remarks, Ambassador Laura Popescu emphasized the real opportunity to strengthen trade relations between the two countries, in a geopolitical context that favors stable partnerships and mutually beneficial investments. In turn, Iuliu Stocklosa, president of the CCIB, explained the Chamber’s strategic objective: to develop an international platform capable of offering Romania visibility and access to the world’s relevant economic ecosystems. This line was reinforced by Bogdan Mihăilescu, economic attaché in London, who insisted on the role of economic lobbying and a stronger institutional presence in the UK.

Beyond the institutional component, the launch of the office brought two major topics of interest to the fore: bilateral trade opportunities and critical developments in energy and data centers. While the first discussion highlighted Romania’s competitive advantages and the still underutilized potential of Romanian-British cooperation, the second delved directly into the pressing issue of energy and digital infrastructure.

Romania’s chance as a destination for major investments in the digital sector

The debate on the energy required for the development of data centers raised a key question: how prepared is Romania to support large investments in a sector with high electricity consumption, which requires predictability, available installed capacity, and consistent regulation? Participants discussed the pressure these projects exert on the grid, the need for clear policies on capacity allocation, and the importance of a real partnership between the state, energy operators, and international investors. An essential element for the British market was also highlighted: the perception of Romania as a destination capable of absorbing industrial-scale developments in the digital area, if it quickly calibrates its energy infrastructure and administrative procedures.

Through its new office, CCIB aims to provide continuity in its collaboration and direct dialogue with UK investors, as well as the infrastructure for presenting and facilitating investments, under the motto “Connecting the West’s Present with the East’s Future.”
