Capalo AI, a Finnish startup specialized in battery storage optimization and trading, is accelerating its expansion across Europe, positioning Romania as its next strategic market. The company has already expanded from the Nordics into the Baltics and recently into new markets such as Poland and Bulgaria, said Joffroy Beckers, Country Manager Romania at Capalo AI.

“We are now actually acquiring our trading license or BRP and BSP licenses in Romania. Overall, we have already contracted an additional 1 GW of capacity which will be commissioned most likely in the next 12 months across all the countries where we are currently operating,” Beckers said at the “Cell to Revenue: Strategy & Investment Outlook” conference, organized by Energynomics with the support of SolarToday Romania, Jinko ESS, Power Konnekt, and Sinexcel.

Beckers emphasized that Romania presents a distinct market structure compared to other European countries, with a more balanced revenue split between wholesale and balancing markets (approximately 60/40), rather than the 80/20 dominance seen in early-stage markets like Finland.

According to Beckers, the company is trading around 400 MW of standalone and hybrid battery capacity so far and is now among the most active battery optimizers in Europe, alongside established UK-based players.

A key pillar of Capalo AI’s model is multi-market optimization, which integrates multiple revenue streams, including day-ahead, intraday, and balancing markets, into a single trading engine powered by proprietary algorithms. The company also operates a virtual power plant (VPP) system, Capalo Zeus VPP, that aggregates multiple assets to optimize market positioning and revenue allocation.

The company also points to increasing liquidity in intraday markets, enabling more advanced trading strategies such as “virtual cycling,” where batteries generate additional revenue opportunities without physical degradation through optimized market re-trading.

Capalo AI expects continued growth in storage revenues, supported by increasing renewable penetration, higher price volatility, and expanding demand for balancing services across European power systems.
