The series of protests at Alro Slatina, one of the largest aluminum producers in Europe, continues with a protest rally of employees in front of the Olt County Prefecture on January 6, 2022.

Thus, four unions of employees – the Free Aluminist Union, the Alro Product Union, the Aluminum Processing Union and the Alro Free Union – announced several protests in the coming period.

“Employees of ALRO S.A and of other companies will attend – who are directly or indirectly affected by the reduction in production capacity of ALRO S.A. by closing 60% of the capacities and sending over 1,500 employees to technical unemployment,” the union representatives wrote in a press release quoted by zf.ro.

The protest comes after another one was organized in front of the company’s headquarters on December 30 in reaction to the prospects of the technical unemployment of more than 1,300 employees, amid a reduction in production capacity.

“The mafia created around electricity and gas resources does not stop its speculative actions, thus irreversibly destroying the Romanian industry. We inform you that not only we are in the same disastrous situation, but the whole industry in Romania is in a deep coma in which it struggles relentlessly from the clutches of electricity and gas speculators. Hundreds of thousands of employees will lose their jobs due to a maximum of 50 ‘smart guys’ who believe they are the owners of the Romanian electricity and gas,” the unions claim.

They say that the steps taken by the leadership and unions at the “Presidency of Romania, the Government of Romania, especially the Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca, the Minister of Energy, the Minister of Labor, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Economy, the Prefect of Olt County were not taken into account and to this date no response was received.”
