The maximum price of energy that companies in the sector can charge households in Great Britain from October 1, 2022 has been set at 3,549 pounds (4,202 euros), which means an increase of 80% compared to the current limit, the British authority announced on Friday regulation of Ofgem, cited by the EFE agency.

The maximum price is currently 1,971 pounds (2,325 euros) per year/household.

It is estimated that this strong increase will further boost year-on-year inflation, which is currently 10.1%, but could reach 13% or more by the end of the year.

The current crisis has caused numerous strikes in different sectors, including the one on Friday by British Post workers, dockers or railway employees, who are demanding wage increases to cope with the current situation, according to Agerpres.

The energy price set on Friday will be valid until December 31, 2022, when a new rate will be set.

The increase in energy prices coincides with the lack of concrete measures from the Government, which emphasized that any decision will be in the hands of the new Prime Minister, who will replace Boris Johnson from September 6.

The GM of Ofgem, Jonathan Brearley, called on the next prime minister – Lis Truss or Rishi Sunak – to adopt “an urgent response to the continued increase in prices”.

“We know the huge impact that the increase in the maximum price will have on UK households and the difficult decisions that consumers will have to make. I speak to customers regularly and know that today’s news will be of great concern to many,” he said.

“The price of energy has reached record highs driven by an aggressive economic act by the Russian state. They have slowly and deliberately cut gas supplies to Europe, causing damage to our households, businesses and the wider economy. Ofgem has no choice but to reflect this increase in costs in the maximum price,” added Brearley.
