Romanian company Prime Batteries Energy Holding, a fast-rising manufacturer of energy storage systems in the European Union, has secured a major investment from private equity fund T2Y Capital, which will become the company’s second-largest shareholder. The transaction, pending regulatory approvals, also grants T2Y a seat on Prime Batteries’ Board of Directors.
The new capital injection comes at a pivotal moment for Prime Batteries, as it plans to ramp up production capacity from the current 2 GWh to more than 8 GWh by 2030. The funding will support industrial expansion and the acceleration of international sales, building on the company’s vertically integrated model that spans from in-house battery cell production to proprietary battery management software.
“Prime Batteries is a hidden European champion in the energy sector,” said Benedikt Friedrich, Managing Director Investments at T2Y Capital. “With a profitable, technology-driven business model, the company is well positioned for international growth. T2Y Capital will help scale this success globally.”
Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Bucharest, Prime Batteries is a fully integrated provider of lithium-ion storage solutions for mobility, industrial, and grid applications. The company currently operates a 300 MWh production facility and is building a new 2 GWh factory as part of its aggressive growth strategy. Its business model is based on vertical integration, technological independence, and innovative approaches like Battery-as-a-Service, allowing clients to access storage systems without high upfront costs.
“This partnership marks a strategic milestone for our company,” said Adrian Polec, Founder and Chairman of Prime Batteries. “T2Y Capital brings not only growth capital but also complementary expertise and access to international markets.” Vicentiu Ciobanu, CEO of Prime Batteries, added: “We can now scale up production and strengthen our position as a European leader in lithium-ion technology.”
The partnership opens up a range of business opportunities for technology vendors, automation providers, industrial construction firms, component manufacturers, and logistics companies. As Prime Batteries expands its production footprint and distribution network, demand will rise for supporting services and infrastructure, including integration of storage in renewable energy projects.
T2Y Capital was founded in 2022 by former investment bankers Patrick Bettscheider and Andreas Haindl, with the aim of supporting European champions in the energy transition. The Munich-based fund targets equity investments ranging from tens to hundreds of millions of euros and qualifies as an Article 9 fund under the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR). In 2024, T2Y also invested in Wetrax Group, a German provider of aerosol-based fire suppression systems for the fast-growing battery storage sector — underlining its systemic approach to the energy storage value chain.
This latest investment highlights the increasing confidence of international investors in Romanian technology and energy companies, as Europe seeks to strengthen its energy independence and industrial competitiveness. With its strong manufacturing base and innovative capabilities, Prime Batteries is well-positioned to play a strategic role in this transformation.
