Sweden announced that it has opted for small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) for its first nuclear expansion in half a century, AFP reports.

The Swedish government said the reactors will be built at the Ringhals plant in southwestern Sweden and will provide an energy output equivalent to two large reactors, or about 1,500 MW.

“For the first time in 50 years, a new nuclear power plant will be built in Sweden,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said at a press conference, according to Agerpres.

The public company Vattenfall announced that it is in negotiations with the British group Rolls-Royce and the American group GE Vernova to select the supplier.

Vattenfall has been examining the conditions for building either SMRs or large-scale reactors for more than a year before announcing its choice on Thursday.

The cost of the project, which aims to build new reactors by 2035, is “still a matter of negotiation,” said the company’s CEO, Anna Borg.

Sweden voted in a 1980 referendum to phase out nuclear power and has since closed six of its 12 aging reactors.

But a political majority now favors expanding nuclear power. The six active reactors currently produce about 30 percent of Sweden’s electricity.
