The contract for the design and execution of the new photovoltaic park with integrated energy storage system for Iași Airport, one of the fastest growing airports in Romania, has been signed. The design and execution works will be carried out by the Building Construction team of STRABAG Romania, which was designated the winner of this contract.
Worth approximately 19.5 million lei (excluding VAT), the contract includes both the design and execution phases and represents a new step in STRABAG’s commitment to supporting the energy transition by developing sustainable infrastructure solutions.
The project involves the installation of approximately 7,552 high-efficiency monocrystalline photovoltaic modules, with a total installed power of 4.42 MWp (DC), supported by 21 string inverters, with a total power of 3.15 MW (AC).
An essential component of the project is the integrated battery energy storage system, which will provide a total storage capacity of 4.73 MWh. It will allow the storage of surplus energy produced during periods of high solar irradiation and its use during periods of high demand or low photovoltaic production, thus contributing to increasing the efficiency and security of the energy supply.
The photovoltaic park will be located on an area of approximately 58,500 square meters and will be integrated into the existing electrical infrastructure of the airport. In addition to the energy production and storage facilities, the project includes the construction of electrical networks, the installation of transformers, monitoring and control systems (SCADA), a local meteorological station, security systems, as well as the auxiliary infrastructure necessary for safe and efficient operation.
The facility will also be equipped with a real-time monitoring platform, which will allow continuous supervision of energy production, storage system performance and operational parameters. This digital approach will contribute to efficient asset management and ensure long-term operational reliability.
“This project has a special significance for us, as it marks STRABAG’s return to Iași Airport, where two years ago we successfully completed the new T4 terminal. By integrating renewable energy production, storage technologies and digital monitoring systems, we contribute to increasing energy efficiency, operational resilience and reducing environmental impact. We are proud to continue developing infrastructure projects that support both connectivity and sustainability,” said Bogdan Mărginean, Technical Managing Director – Building Construction Team, STRABAG Romania.
“The signing of the contract for the design and execution of the second photovoltaic park represents a new concrete step in our strategy for sustainable development and increasing the energy independence of Iași Airport. I congratulate the STRABAG team for winning this important project and I am convinced that, through its professionalism and experience, it will contribute to the successful implementation of a landmark investment for airport infrastructure in Romania. Once completed, this project will allow us to cover, together with the first photovoltaic park, up to 95% of the airport’s energy needs, significantly reducing operational costs and environmental impact. It is a strategic investment, financed by European funds, which confirms our commitment to modernization, efficiency and responsible long-term development,” added Romeo Vatră – General Manager of Iași Airport.
The contract provides for a three-month design period and a seven-month execution period.
