Cybersecurity is an overlooked topic in the renewable energy sector, where discussions are dominated by the efficiency of solar panels and battery capacity, said Sebastian Babu, National Sales Manager at KSTAR New Energy, a manufacturer of inverters and energy storage systems.

“When we talk about renewable energy, people think first and foremost about efficiency—panel efficiency, inverter efficiency, and how much a battery can store. But no one talks about cybersecurity,” said Babu at the DigitALL 2026 conference organized by Energynomics in Bucharest.

The KSTAR representative maintains that his company’s approach differs from the rest of the market, as cybersecurity is integrated into products right from the manufacturing stage. A concrete example is the data logger—a device that monitors and transmits data from a photovoltaic system—for which the company has implemented measures to protect against unauthorized access.

An important element of KSTAR’s security architecture is the location of the servers that receive the data collected by the data loggers: they are located in the Netherlands, which means they are subject to European legislation on data protection and cybersecurity.

Babu also noted that KSTAR is already in the process of implementing the European security standards set to take effect at the end of 2027, with the aim of ensuring that current users of the equipment are protected in advance, without having to make subsequent changes to the installed systems.
